The life and death of an Ouroboros (writers jam 2025)

Posted by AntCrowLion - 1 day ago

Every choice has a price,

within each second, death thrives.

As time passes on, the world carries on...

What will you sacrifice?

What will you form?

Will you remain a child, so radiant, so bright

Full of potential, yet not willing to fight?

Or will you be a monster, ruled by fear and desire,

Always consuming whatever lies higher,

Or will you finally break,

the cycle of cycles?

Will you finally wake?

You know that is vital!

Whatever you choose,

Whatever you’ll be,

You are always going to lose,

You will never be free!”

Jake wakes up from another nightmare. The strange voice sings to him again. It is disturbing. He doesn’t know why, but it simply is. But that only lasts until he has his morning coffee. After that, Jake forgets, as all healthy humans do. Jake then goes to work, drinks another coffee, talks with his colleagues, does whatever his boss tells him to do, goes home and spends the rest of the day on his cellphone. Jake’s life is simple, but is also exhausting.

You see, Jake always wants something, he just doesn’t know what. So, he lets others tell him what. There’s a new game he needs. There is a new phone that he needs. A new car that he needs. Jake is full of wants imposed by others, which he then starts to call needs. At this point, he doesn’t even know the difference between want and need anymore. He just consumes whatever you put in front of him. But Jake isn’t dumb. He knows this. Everybody knows this, but they do it anyway. When a snake eats itself, it knows what it’s doing. It just does so because it’s in captivity

But Jake is a new man! Gone are the days when he would just smoke weed and play video games all day! He is a new man, with a new job and good income! All he needs to do is find a girlfriend and start a family! That’s what everybody keeps telling him anyway... So that is definitely what he needs to do to escape from this cycle! And so, a new cycle begins…

Why can’t you see?

That you are amputating your own knee.

There are no chains to flee,

This won’t make you feel free!

You shed a new skin,

but you’re still the same snake within.

When you use the same excuses,

I confess, it’s a feeling that confuses...

How far did you move?

How did you improve?

Are your possessions,

Your only true proof?

How far did you move?

How the fuck did you improve?

Isn’t this a lie,

Just so you can fly by?

Jake wakes up from another dream. The strange voice sings to him again. It is annoying. He doesn’t know why, but it simply is. But that only lasts until he has his morning coke. After that, Jake forgets, as all sick humans do. Jake then goes to work, drinks, tolerates his colleagues, does coke again, then does whatever the fuck his boss tells him to do, goes home, does coke again, and then spends the rest of the day rotting in front of his cellphone, jacking off. Jake’s life is a complete nightmare, but it’s not his fault: it’s all society’s fault of course.

You see, Jake always needs something, society just doesn’t give it to him. If he got all the very simple things that he needs he would be happy. He just needs to find the right woman. He just needs to be a real man. He just needs to be very very rich. Jake is full of needs that he calls rights. At this point, he doesn’t even know the difference between right and wrong anymore. So he let others decide it for him. But Jake is dumb. He doesn’t know this. Not anymore. Not everybody knows this. When a snake eats itself, it doesn’t know what it’s doing. It just does so because it’s sick.

But Jake is a new man! Gone are the days when he would just follow others! He started a new course on how to be an alpha male! He will follow more experienced and higher alphas and they will tell him how to be a real man and how to be rich! That’s what he wants, right? So that is definitely what he needs to do to escape from this cycle!

And so, a new cycle begins…

You thought you were eating a Dragon Pearl,

that you would ascend and win over the perfect Girl,

You didn’t realize you were eating your own tail,

That you were always destined to truly fail,

But it doesn’t have to be this way,

If you could only accept being an ordinary fey,

You don’t have to be a mighty Huanglong,

Just a small snake, dancing with a nice song,

Jörmungandr crumbled upon its own weight,

Maybe being small is a better trait!

Don’t you wanna try?

Being the real you, not someone else’s lie?

Jake wakes up from another dream. The strange voice sings to him again. But it was nice this time. He doesn’t know why, but it simply was. But that only lasts until he has his morning coffee. After that, Jake forgets, as people do. Jake then goes to work, drinks some coffee, helps his colleagues and boss. He then goes home, spends some time on his cellphone, but now he has some time for his new hobby playing the piano. Jake’s life is simple, but happy nonetheless.

You see, Jake never wanted nor needed something. He was just afraid that he would never achieve the expectations others placed on him. Expectations HE placed on himself. The day he shed those expectations, he was finally, truly free. But Jake isn’t dumb. He never was. He was simply a blind snake, following his tongue. When a snake eats itself, it doesn’t matter whether it knows what it’s doing or not, it just does so either way. The snake must only understand WHY it’s doing it...

But Jake is still the same man! He is still struggling with a terrible addiction to cocaine. He’s been sober for 8 months as of now. He did find a new girlfriend, but the relation is not working out very well. Maybe things will work out, maybe they won’t...

And so, a new cycle begins…

Wow, I really like your interpretation of the prompt with the repetition. I think you really captured the cyclical nature of Jake's situation and it was really fun to read. One thing I noticed is that the way you directly stated the theme in the end ("You see, Jake never wanted nor needed something...") reminded me of a fable/fairytale meant for children, which combined with the mature themes of addiction felt jarring. That's not a bad thing though, especially if that's what you were going for. I also like how the ending is left up to interpretation. Awesome work!

Thanks! My biggest fear was to come accross as too "preachy", but I wanted to make the message clear! Glad you liked it!

Wow! I am impressed with how fast you managed to make this

I really like the poems you included in here, I like how their writing style contrasts so much with the rest of the story. I like how this implies the voice is a separate entity from Jake, or at least a part of him that he doesn't fully understand, which from personal experience is quite the accurate portrayal of intrusive thoughts

One note though, why does Jake come to that realisation at the end? There don't seem to be any hints that he would come to that realisation, outside of the voice telling him the truth about his life

Outside of that, awesome story!
I love how you used Ouroboros as a motif, it really adds to Jake's life being a cycle

Sometimes the truth is all it takes!

Glad you like the story!

Everybody's been a Jake, huh? I want to break some cycles. Oh, well. Some cycles can't be broken. So you have to deal with them.

Isn't dealing with a cycle the same as breaking?

@AntCrowLion well. I can see it that way too, can't I? ;-)
